Children’s Museum Made More Accessible to the Community

May 10, 2021

aMuse’um Children’s Museum is taking big strides to ensure that all families in Maury County and beyond are able to take part in the museum’s exhibits and programs this summer. aMuse’um will be extending their summer hours to serve more families, in addition to entering its third year as a Museum’s for All participant, which helps make certain that the cost of museum admission is not a barrier for low-income families.

Through Museums for All, a cooperative initiative between the Association of Children's Museums (ACM) and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), those receiving food assistance (SNAP benefits) can gain reduced admission to more than 600 museums throughout the United States by presenting their SNAP EBT (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Electronic Benefit Transfer) card.

Since aMuse’um began offering the program to the Maury County community almost three years ago, dozens of low-income families have been able to freely enjoy the museum’s programs and exhibits. “One focus of particular interest to our employees is to make our services available to all members of the community, regardless of socioeconomic status,” aMuse’um Program and Guest Services Specialist Amber Clark said.

aMuse’um is one of five Tennessee museums collaborating in the program, offering a $2 per person admission with presented ID and a EBT or SNAP card (limit up to four individuals per card). This reduced rate is available during normal operating hours. Beginning May 24th, 2021, summer hours will be from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. They will remain closed on Sunday, with the exception of private birthday parties and visitors to the museum’s gift shop.

Families visiting the museum will enjoy all of the available exhibits, along with free weekly activities like Bubble Fun, Science Fun and Tinkering Thursday. In addition to these activities, families with children ranging in age from 3 years old to 12 years old can take part in summer-themed day camps for an additional fee.

“With schools being out for the summer, we wanted to make sure that families and caregivers looking to engage children with learning opportunities are able to do so,” Executive Director Maeghan Wall said.
